MARC JACOBSON, P.C. OFFERS EXPERTISE IN MEDIA & ENTERTAINMENT LAW
New York, New York--March 1, 2010 -- Marc Jacobson, an internationally-renowned media & entertainment lawyer, business executive and lecturer with broad experience in the Entertainment, Internet and Media industries, announced today the launch of his new law firm, Marc Jacobson, P.C. Located in midtown Manhattan, the firm will offer new and existing clients guidance in the creation, development, financing, distribution, and exploitation of film, television, music, publishing, and theatrical properties through traditional means as well as mobile and Internet platforms.
As a senior executive at Prodigy Communications Corp. in the late 1990’s, Jacobson was a principal draftsman of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act. After Prodigy, he served as a senior executive at two publicly traded Internet companies. He is the Founding Chairman of the New York State Bar Association Section on Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law, which began in 1984. Since October 2001, he has been Of Counsel at Greenberg, Traurig LLP in New York City.
“I’m very excited about working in a boutique setting again, with all the flexibility it offers,” Jacobson said. “Advances in technology present great opportunities for current and future clients in the entertainment and media businesses and also allows the firm the chance to embrace practical, alternative fee structures to benefit our clients.”
Jacobson represents a wide range of clients including The New York Philharmonic; BMG Music Rights, a joint venture between Bertelsmann and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts; GoomRadio.com, a French based internet radio station with a growing US presence; Jimmy Webb, the great American songwriter and author of “Up, Up & Away,” “Wichita Lineman” among other classic songs; Omega Entertainment, producer of the forthcoming “Betty Anne Waters,” starring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell; DGDW Entertainment, a leading producer of concerts to benefit charitable organizations; Fred Zollo, noted theatrical (“A Steady Rain” “Angels in America”) and motion picture (“Quiz Show” the forthcoming “Sweet Lorraine”) producer; Cherry Lane Music Publishing, which publishes the music of The Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Fergie, Quincy Jones and others; the chart topping singer Nicole Henry; and Brian and Ed Holland, members of Holland-Dozier-Holland, famed Motown songwriters.
The firm will continue its focus on representing talent and companies in their music and motion picture related projects, especially in connection with the purchase and sale of music publishing and other catalogs, as well as the financing, production and distribution of motion pictures. Jacobson is well-versed in effectively using state, federal and foreign tax incentives in financing the production of television and theatrical motion pictures. He plans to devote significant attention to the challenges faced by music publishers in licensing their works across the European Union.
Jacobson was a pioneer in the Internet business, playing a major role in the success of Prodigy Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:PRGY) from 1995 - 1999, serving as Chief Financial Officer, General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Corporate Development & Public Policy. He helped guide Prodigy’s three divisions and international ventures in nine countries. He helped orchestrate the company’s successful management-led/investor-backed buyout in 1996 and its IPO in February 1999. He also helped resolve the Stratton Oakmont v Prodigy libel case, averting $200 million in damages and reversing a prior ruling against Prodigy without payment of any money to the plaintiff. He testified before Congress and the World Intellectual Property Organization (“WIPO”) regarding the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and the Berne Convention. Jacobson’s business career also included the following executive positions: President and Chief Operating Officer, Politics.com, Inc. (www.politics.com) (NASDAQ: POCO); Chief Financial Officer, Turbo Chef Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRBO); President, TurboChef Internet (www.turbochef.com); Chief Operating Officer, MY-CD.com, Inc. (www.my-cd.com). He was instrumental in raising over $340 million for Prodigy and these companies.
